New insights into guar gum as environmentally friendly polymer for enhanced oil recovery in high-salinity and high-temperature sandstone reservoirs

Abstract Chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes are usually used as additives for hydrocarbon production due to its simplicity and relatively reasonable additional costs. Polymer flooding uses polymer solutions increase by decreasing the water/oil mobility ratio increasing viscosity of displacing water. The commonly synthetic water-soluble in EOR application is partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). However, polymers general not attractive because high cost, environmental concerns, limitation temperature, high-salinity environment. Guar gum an environmentally friendly natural available large quantities many countries widely various applications gas industry especially drilling fluids hydraulic fracturing operations; however, very limited studies investigated on guar a no any study high-temperature -salinity reservoirs. objective this confirm use sandstone reservoirs investigate applicability experimentally rheological characteristics obtained from with consideration temperature (up 210 °F) salinity 20% NaCl) tested solution polymer. results show that can be enhance recovery. Based results, it concluded shows shear-thinning behavior strongly susceptible microbial degradation but also good properties stability salinity, where low shear rate case, about 100 cp achieved at °F prepared deionized presence NaCl acceptable less than 190 °F.
